England odds cut for World Cup 2010

After being drawn favourably for the World Cup 2010, the betting odds on England lifting the trophy have been cut to 7/1 with bookmakers bwin. England will face the United States in their opening game next summer, with other fixtures against Slovenia and Algeria.
England are odds on to qualify as group winners and were instantly cut from 8/1 to 7/1 after the draw in South Africa last Friday.
Spain and Brazil remain hot favourites for the Jules Remet trophy… this despite the fact Brazil have been drawn in the so-called group of death which features Portugal and Ivory Coast. Ivory Coast had previously been tipped to be the best performing of all the African teams but this now looks likely to be Cameroon who will face Denmark, Japan and Holland.

University student creates anti card counting software

A news article, distributed via the BBC (see original), tells us that a university student from Dundee has produced a computer programme that can monitor casino Blackjack tables with such precision that it can spot card counters or dealer related errors. The computer application looks at the dealers actions and judges the decisions that are made by the people playing at the blackjack table.
In the movie 21 (starring Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey), stemming from the story ‘Bringing Down The House’, a group of students make a massive profit from counting cards in Vegas casinos. 21 suggests that the act of counting cards is performed via a number of complex math calculations based on the cards already dealt on the table. While not an illegal activity, counting cards will generally result in casino regulars being barred from the casino.
Counting Cards is still a widely followed practice and several known groups that try to count cards throughout Britain. The maths student who came up with the software that could potentially end card counting is set to attract worldwide acclaim and is expected to be put in front of many of the major casino operators in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, a leading member of a top UK based casino has suggested that casinos are no longer concerned that blackjack players have an edge over the house through use of basic strategy. He explained how his staff had been trained to “ignore” people counting cards, “unless they were seen to be using a computer or other device”.
With the prospect of card counting at casinos is likely to come to an end it would be no surprise to see even more complex, and most likely illegal, ways of exploiting the casinos showing up just around the corner

Playing the lottery for most people means the chance at living the life they’ve always dreamed. Deep down most know they probably won’t win but hey, until you play you’ll definitely not win! So, what about those lucky people who have played and won. What do they do with all that money?
Obviously it depends on the individual. Or they have so little left over after lavishing themselves with gifts and holidays that they end up back at their job, the one where they almost told their boss what they could do with their job. 
Now, we only live once and I abide by this mantra. I mean, it’s a fact but in terms of experiencing life, if I won a million pounds then I can unapologetically say that I would splash out and buy the house I’ve always wanted, a nice car, help out my immediate family and so on. However, there’s a reason the rich continue to grow richer and maintain their wealth over time.
Despite my cynism, some lottery winners spend their cash sensibly. For example, some will invest in property as a long-term investment. This is sound, even in a recession. The money tied to property is illiquid meaning they can’t just pull out the equity immediately.
Some lottery winners will buy their dream cars however, most cars depreciate in value, not go up, unless it’s a classic car that’s been well maintained or kept in a garage which defeats the purpose wouldn’t you say?
Needless to say, if you ever win a large sum of money my advice would be to contact a financial advisor and learn to invest it wisely. You can still splash out on yourself and your family but remember, if you love your new lifestyle and want it to continue, you’ll need to learn to invest. You can still live the dream lifestyle but think how good you’ll feel when that lifestyle is maintained as opposed to being all spent up within a couple years?
